Are Your Valentine’s Day Flowers Eco-Friendly? Flowers are all about the experience. Perhaps no other gift engages your senses like a flower delivery. Part of this experience, is enjoying the scent and the joyful act of arranging the flowers in a vase. Here on the farm, we love to get up close and personal with our flowers. For that reason we’ve dedicated our business to making sure that our flowers are as safe, sustainable and eco-friendly as possible. Our farm has gone through a rigorous certification process by the Rainforest Alliance, which you may be familiar with from buying coffee and bananas, or other tropically sourced food. Ironically our farm, located among the redwoods of Humboldt County, is in a temperate rainforest. So the certification is rather apropos, and the frogs love it here as well! We want you and your love ones to enjoy your flower delivery to the fullest, and a big part of this is knowing that the flowers were grown in a sustainable manner, in harmon
Back to School Flowers Where did summer go? Here at Stargazer Barn it seems we entered some sort of vortex that shot us out the other side of summer, way too soon. Back to school is more than just the beginning of fall and another academic year. It’s a time for us parents to mark a milestone and embrace a new semester with new teachers, new friends and likely new routines. We need to celebrate and acknowledge these times. This is how we create memories. This is the perfect time to send a flower delivery or a flowers and wine delivery to your spouse. Summers are tough on childcare, yes there are fun vacations and a break from the routine, but how many mornings are you or your significant other scratching your heads at what to do with the kids for the next day or the next week? This is also a great time to send a “thank you” flower delivery to the friends and family that pitched in to help. For our family it is Grandmom and Granddad that came to the rescue. Sending an overn
Celebrate American Flowers Week! You’ve heard of farm-to-table, but have you heard of field-to-vase? That is the essence of American Flowers Week – which happens every year from June 28th through July 4th. AFW is a celebration of American grown flowers and the farmers who cultivate them, like us here at Stargazer Barn. Knowing that your flowers are grown in America (which helps both our economy and the freshness and durability of your flowers) is a potent reassurance at time of purchase. Even better when you know the farm fresh flowers you order come directly from the people who grow them — we don’t source our flowers from other farms, states, or countries — we grow them, from seed and from bulb, in our own backyard. Enjoying a colorful variety of farm-fresh American grown flowers in original, creative arrangements is just the beginning of the American Grown experience. Why not celebrate this week with something that pleases the palate as well as the eye and nose?
Flowers Packed With Care A bouquet of farm-fresh flowers which have been hand packed with care by the very people who tended and grew those flowers is the ultimate expression of quality. That quality is exactly what we offer from Stargazer Barn. We are one of the premier flower farms in California, and we take care to pack all our flowers, wine, and gifts to maintain maximum freshness and integrity. No matter the occasion, flowers and wine make an excellent gift. Bright spring blooms such as tulips or iris make a great thank you gift, especially when paired with a bottle of red or white wine. A bouquet of lilies and bottle of wine is a thoughtful and romantic expression of love and affection, while an arrangement of white calla lilies is an appropriate way of expressing sympathy to someone. Simply put, it’s almost impossible to go wrong with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The only issue is making sure your flowers are as fresh as can be when they arrive at their destination.
Earth Day Flowers Saturday, April 22nd is Earth Day 2017—a day allocated for collective appreciation and celebration of this Planet Earth, where we all reside. Earth Day officially began in 1970, when 22 million Americans came together to raise awareness about the importance of clean land, air, and water, which eventually led to the creation of the US EPA and the passage of the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. Now, nearly 200 countries will join in celebrating our earth, with the aim to protect and preserve it to the best of our abilities. Earth Day Flowers The most common symbols used for Earth Day are trees and flowers symbolizing the continued growth of a healthy environment. Recently, there has been a rising trend of using iris bouquets as quintessential Earth Day Flowers, which here at the Barn we see as a fitting symbol of a Blue Planet. Blue Telstar Iris bouquets from Stargazer Barn are perfect Earth Day flowers, and make a wonderful gift. Our Iris are a symbol of our missio
Send Eco-Friendly Flowers Sending flowers is one of the best ways to put a smile on someone’s face, and also makes celebrating any occasion extra special. When you send eco-friendly flowers, you not only show care for the person who receives them; you also show you care about the how the flowers are grown and what it means for the environment. What Do “Eco-Friendly Flowers” Mean? Eco-friendly flowers, such as those certified sustainable by VeriFlora or Bloom Check are grown using sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, chiefly reducing the amount of chemical fertilizers, fungicides, and pesticides in the air, water, and land. This means flower farmers must meet a series of standards to ensure their flowers are sustainably grown. For planting and picking, this means pest management, field management, and soil and water quality are closely monitored. Eco-friendly flowers must stay below a certain number of toxicity units per acre, and highly toxic pesticides are prohib
3 Reasons to Buy Farm Direct Flowers At Stargazer Barn you are purchasing flowers direct from the farm. Literally, the greenhouses are right outside the barn office, where I am writing this blog post. Many places claim they offer flowers direct from the farm…but they aren’t the actual farm. We are the farm. We only sell flowers we grow; that’s why you don’t see a crazy collection of blooms on our website. Our flowers put on one heck of show. We plant flowers that grow really well in our Northern California climate, mainly year-round tulips, lilies, iris and then calla lilies in the summer. We also have local foliage in some of our offerings, and these are foraged in the surrounding redwood forests and coastal hills of Humboldt County. When it comes to flowers, freshness counts. There are three key aspects of buying flowers direct from the grower. First is freshness. You simply cannot get fresher flowers than we offer at Stargazer Barn. This is critical, because you want yo
